CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

Provides the training required and outlined under U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR) §172.704(a)(2) and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) 1.5.1.2.1(b) Function Specific Training and 1.6 Adequate Instruction for shipping Section II Lithium Batteries.

This course covers the skills needed to prepare, offer and accept ground and/or air shipments of lithium batteries. It is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the general provisions, is able to recognize and identify the different types of batteries, has knowledge of specific requirements of the applicable regulations, self-protection measures and accident prevention methods and procedures.

NOTE: This course does not meet the training requirements for other hazard classes, just Function Specific Lithium Batteries certification.

None

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to: 

  1. Identify the differences between the 49CFR & IATA (DGR) regulations. 
  2. Define the new vocabulary. 
  3. Define the new communication requirements. 
  4. Recognize new per package limitations. 
  5. Recognize net quantity limitations. 
  6. Identify the new layers of packing instructions. 
  7. Understand the State and Operators Variation. 
  8. Identify the six proper shipping names under the IATA Regulations. 
  9. Identify the three proper shipping names under 49CFR (with Special Provisions). 
  10. Distinguish Lithium Ion Batteries from Lithium Metal Batteries. 
  11. Identify Primary and Secondary Lithium Batteries. 

 

FINAL OBJECTIVE:

Through all of this, emphasis will be placed on each student’s responsibility when offering Lithium Batteries into ground and/or air transportation.
