Provides the training required and outlined under AFMAN 24-604. The AFMAN 24-604 governs the transport of hazardous materials when entered into Defense Transportation System (DTS) as cargo on military controlled fixed and rotary wing aircraft according to (DTR 4500.9-R), Defense Transportation Regulation.

This course introduces and reviews the skills needed by handlers, packers, inspectors and preparers (certifiers) of hazardous materials so that they comply with the rules designed to maximize safety and security of the aircraft, aircrew, cargo and passengers on Military Airlift. The provisions of this manual are directive in nature, and must be complied with by those personnel whose positions or jobs entail responsibility for the functions covered. This course is also required for military suppliers & contractors who have the responsibility to supply finished goods and products for shipment by military air. This training is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the changes that have occurred over the past year(s) in AFMAN 24-604. Instruction will focus on non-bulk packages offered into transportation.

NOTE: All branches of the U.S. Military use this document as the basis to prepare hazardous materials/dangerous goods shipments by military air transport.  This course does not cover the regulations for offering fully regulated lithium batteries radioactive (Class 7) or infectious shipments into transportation.

  1. Initial - Successful completion of an “Initial” or “Recurrent” Hazardous Materials in Ground and Air Transportation class within the past two (2) years.
  2. Recurrent – Successful completion of an “Initial” or “Recurrent” AFMAN 24-604 training class and a Hazardous Materials in Ground and Air Transportation class within the past two (2) years.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Navigate the Air Force Manual 24-604.
  2. Pack, package, mark & label hazardous materials in accordance with Air Force Manual 24-604.
  3. Prepare all necessary documentation e.g. Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods by Air in accordance with Air Force Manual 24-604.
  4. Recognize security risks related to the transportation of hazardous materials in commerce.

Through all of this, emphasis will be placed on each student’s responsibility when offering hazardous materials into military air transportation.
