Provides the training required as outlined under AFMAN 24-604. This publication governs the transportation of hazardous materials when entered into Defense Transportation System (DTS) as cargo on military controlled fixed and rotary wing aircraft according to (DTR 4500.9-R), Defense Transportation Regulation.

This course covers the skills needed by handlers, packers, inspectors and preparers (certifiers) of hazardous materials so that they comply with the rules designed to maximize safety and security of the aircraft, aircrew, cargo and passengers on Military Airlift. The provisions of this manual are directive in nature, and must be complied with by those personnel whose positions or jobs entail responsibility for the functions covered. This course is also required for military suppliers & contractors who have the responsibility to supply finished goods and products for shipment by military air. This training is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the changes that have occurred over the past year(s) in AFMAN 24-604. 

NOTE 1: All branches of the U.S. Military use this document as the basis to prepare hazardous materials / dangerous goods shipments by military air transport.  

NOTE 2: Instruction will focus on non-bulk packages offered into transportation.

NOTE 3: This course does not cover the regulatory requirements for offering fully regulated lithium batteries radioactive (Class 7) or infectious shipments into transportation.

 

Prerequisites

  1. Initial - Successful completion of an “Initial” or “Recurrent” Hazardous Materials in Ground and Air Transportation class within the past two (2) years.

 

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to: 

  1. Navigate the Air Force Manual 24-604.
  2. Pack, package, mark & label hazardous materials in accordance with Air Force Manual 24-604.
  3. Prepare all necessary documentation (e.g. Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods by Air) in accordance with Air Force Manual 24-604.
  4. Recognize security risks related to the transportation of hazardous materials in commerce.

 

Final Objective

Emphasis is placed on each student’s responsibility when offering hazardous materials / dangerous goods for military air transportation.
