Provides the training required to prepare lithium battery shipments as outlined under U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR) §172.704(a)(2), IMDG Code 1.3, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) 1.5.1.2.1(b) and 1.6.
This course covers the skills needed to prepare, offer and accept ground, air and/or ocean shipments of lithium batteries. It is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat/DG employee/student has familiarity with the general provisions, is able to recognize and identify the different types of batteries, has knowledge of specific requirements of the applicable regulations, self-protection measures and accident prevention methods and procedures.
NOTE: This course does not meet the training requirements for other hazard classes, just Function Specific Lithium Batteries certification.

Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Distinguish lithium ion (or secondary lithium) batteries from lithium metal (or primary lithium) batteries.
- Identify the six proper shipping names used in the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), IATA DGR and IMDG Code.
- Understand State and Operator Variations found in the IATA DGR.
- Reveiw the applicable special provisions.
- Identify the correct packing instructions.
- Recognize net quantity limitations per package.
- Define the new communication requirements.
- Identify the differences between the HMR, IATA DGR and IMDG Code
Final Objective
Emphasis is placed on each student’s responsibility when offering lithium batteries for ground, air and/or ocean transportation.
