Provides the training required as outlined under U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR), Part 172, Subpart H, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), Section 1.5 and the International Maritime Association (IMO) Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG), Section 1.3.
This course covers the skills needed to prepare, offer and accept ground, air and/or ocean shipments of hazardous materials/ dangerous goods. It is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the general transport provisions of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), IATA DGRand IMDG Code, is able to recognize and identify hazardous materials / dangerous goods, has knowledge of specific requirements of the regulations applicable to functions performed by the employee/student, and has knowledge of emergency response information, self-protection measures and accident prevention methods and procedures.
NOTE 1: Instruction will focus on non-bulk packages offered into transportation.
NOTE 2: This course does not cover the regulatory requirements for offering fully regulated lithium batteries, radioactive (Class 7) or infectious shipments into transportation.

Learning Objective
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Recognize and identify hazardous materials / dangerous goods in transportation.
- Identify who regulates what in terms of hazardous materials / dangerous goods transportation in United States (domestic versus international rules & regulations).
- Navigate through the HMR, IATA DGR and IMDG Code.
- Classify products by hazard class, division and/or packing group.
- Recognize and identify UN specification packagings.
- Recognize and identify proper marks and labels for a shipment.
- Complete shipping documentation with the required hazardous materials / dangerous goods information.
- Prepare, offer and accept most domestic and international shipments of hazardous materials / dangerous goods by ground, air and/or ocean.
- Understand the specific requirements of the regulations as it relates to their job function.
- Understand the precautions to be taken when handling hazardous materials / dangerous goods.
Final Objective
Emphasis is placed on each student’s responsibility when offering hazardous materials / dangerous goods for ground, air and/or ocean transportation.
