Provides the initial training required as outlined under U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR), Part 172, Subpart H.

This course covers the skills needed to prepare, offer and accept ground and/or air shipments of hazardous materials. It is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the general transport provisions of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), is able to recognize and identify hazardous materials, has knowledge of specific requirements of the regulations applicable to functions performed by the employee/student, and has knowledge of emergency response information, self-protection measures and accident prevention methods and procedures. 

NOTE 1: Instruction will focus on non-bulk packages offered into transportation by motor vehicle.

NOTE2: This course does not cover the regulations for offering fully regulated lithium batteries, radioactive (Class 7) or infectious shipments into transportation.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Recognize and identify hazardous materials in transportation.
  2. Identify who regulates what in terms of hazardous materials transportation in the United States. 
  3. Navigate through the 49 CFR.
  4. Classify products by hazard class, division and/or packing group.
  5. Recognize and identify most UN specification packagings.
  6. Recognize and identify proper marks and labels for a shipment.
  7. Complete shipping documentation with the required hazardous materials information.
  8. Prepare, offer and accept most domestic shipments of hazardous materials by ground.
  9. Understand the specific requirements of the regulations as it relates to their job function.
  10. Understand the precautions to be taken when handling hazardous materials.

 

Final Objective

Emphasis is placed on each student’s responsibility when offering hazardous materials for ground transportation.
